Hoard’s Dairyman says to never give up high milk production.  High producing dairy cows convert 1 pound of dry matter to 2 to 2.5 pounds of milk. According to the August edition of Hoard’s, a pound of dry matter costs 13 to 16 cents. Two pounds of milk at 20 cents a pound results in 40 cents of income with a profit margin of 26 cents per pound of dry matter.  What may have a negative impact on this conversion rate could be a high somatic cell count.

Michael Hutjens, author of an article in the aforementioned edition of Hoard’s, says that lowering SCC bolsters milk yield, reduces nutrient requirements and gives the cow tools to build a favorable immune response. For each linear SCC score decline, milk production may elevate 2 to 2.5 pounds at no additional costs. This also does not take into consideration milk quality bonuses.
